About Us

Bethesda Cares Is a Community Outreach Program for the Homeless. Our mission is to respond with compassion and creativity to help the homeless and persons in need in the community and to help prevent impending homelessness in Montgomery County.

We help place people living unsheltered into permanent, supportive housing; ease life for those sleeping on the street; and keep low-income tenants from eviction.

Founded in 1988 by a group of local congregations, we offer flexible, creative responses to problems related to homelessness and poverty. We are located in the heart of downtown Bethesda, although our Outreach Program is available to those living on the street from the DC Metro area.

Our Housing Stabilization Program offers modest grants to low-income clients enduring temporary financial crises, who are facing utility shut-off or eviction. This safety net can keep our clients from possible homelessness, which is invaluable both to the clients and to our community.

Our Staff

Bethesda Cares has a small but dedicated staff, ably and is assisted by hundreds of volunteers from the community. Our outreach team works closely with people experiencing long-term homelessness, helping them find paths to homes. Our Housing Stabilization Counselor helps low-income individuals facing financial crises to stay in their homes, through our eviction prevention and utility shut-off assistance programs. We also have a psychiatrist available to help clients both one-on-one and through the power of group therapy sessions.

Our Board

Our volunteer Board of Directors provides Bethesda Cares with policy direction and fiscal oversight, as well as assisting with our community outreach.
